For over 160 years the Kirwan family have been catching fish in the waters off Clogherhead using the oldest and most environmentally friendly method of fishing, seine netting or Scottish fly dragging.
John Kirwan Snr, who like his father before him was a seine net fisherman all of his life, retired from fishing at the age of 65. During his fishing career he skippered the fishing boat Ros Oithír from 1954 and then the Seán Óg from 1972. John and his wife Theresa continue to visit the Fishermans Catch fish shop every day to enquire about how their grandson Jonathan is doing out at sea.
John Kirwan Jnr, like his father, also was a fisherman all of his life. After fishing with his father on the Ros Oithír and Seán Óg, he acquired and became skipper of the fishing boat Argent in 1999 and then the current fishing boat Argonaut IV in 2003. In 2009 he took a step back from fishing so that he could open and run the Fishermans Catch Fish Shop with his wife Michelle.
The Argonaut IV is now operated by their son Jonathan who is the youngest seine net skipper in Ireland.
